Healthy Start Initiative

The ARCCP is one of 96 communities in the United States to receive Healthy Start Initiative grants, intended to reduce high infant mortality rates and other health problems related to pregnancy and women's health. The Healthy Start Initiative focuses on the contributing factors which research shows influence the perinatal trends in high risk communities.

Drug Free Communities

Combating drug use among youth is a top priority of the ARCCP. With the help of a planning grant through the Drug-Free Communities Act Support Program, run by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the ARCCP has worked with local partners to assess all current drug prevention activities of community agencies and is trying to consolidate these strategies and activities into a single, community-wide drug prevention plan.
The ARCCP, along with key partners, has applied for a grant to implement a drug prevention program for youth in Richmond County.

Abstinence Education

Abstinence education has been recognized by the Augusta-Richmond County community as a need and avenue to reduce teen pregnancy, school failure/dropout, and sexually transmitted diseases. In an effort to research and plan, implement abstinence education, and teach children/youth to withhold from having sex until marriage, the ARCCP applied for, received and continue to seek funding for abstinence education. Some of the funding that has been received include:

CYCC Abstinence Only Education
The Children and Youth Coordinating Council (CYCC) Abstinence Only Education grant provides funds for an abstinence until marriage education program at Morgan Road Middle School. This program integrates Richmond County Board of Education's Family Dynamics curriculum with the Choosing the Best curriculum and includes a social marketing campaign developed by a small group of students participating in the After School Social Marketing Program. Students in the Abstinence Only Program are followed for a three year period and receive age/grade appropriate curriculum.

SPRANS Abstinence Only Education
The Special Projects of Regional and National Significance (SPRANS) Abstinence Only Education grant awarded by the Health Resources and Services Administration allowed the ARCCP to examine the need for and feasibility of developing and implementing a program to promote abstinence only education programs within the local community.
